May report reveals large Reynolds American contribution to RSLC on heels of attack ad
A May IRS report shows that tobacco company Reynolds American gave the Republican State Leadership Committee $200,000 on May 5, six days after the D.C.-based 527 organization gave its second large donation to Justice For All NC ($250,000). The RSLC had given Justice For All $650,000 one week earlier, on April 23. During that roughly two-week period before the May 6 primary election, Justice For All ran an attack ad costing at least $768,000 against Justice Robin Hudson, who is defending her seat on the NC Supreme Court. Hudson won the primary and faces challenger Eric Levinson in November.
The recent contribution brings Reynolds American's donations to the RSLC to $275,075 in 2014. Other big NC donors this year include MMIC Agency, LLC ($100,000), Lorillard Tobacco Company ($50,000) and Time Warner Cable ($50,000). The RSLC is by far Justice For All's biggest funder, but Justice For All has also received $30,000 from Reynolds American this election cycle, as well as some smaller donations from other groups and individuals.
