The quality of the cotton and the manner in which it is weaved effect its softness and feel. Quality is mainly based on the length of the cotton fibers (staples) attached to the cotton seeds. The weave produces different thread arrangements and it also establishes the thread count which is the total number of threads when counted along the top and one side of a square inch of material. The thread count of good quality sheets starts around 180 while even better quality sheets continue up the range to thread counts of 400 or 500. Thread counts above the 400 to 500 range are available but many people question their increased value.
Duvet cover size - Comforters come in different sizes. The size of the cover you buy has to match the size of your duvet; otherwise the cover will just be completely useless. Take the necessary measurements of your duvet and then find a cover that matches these measurements. Note that this does not mean that you have to buy a cover with the same measurements because it will not fit. Buy one that is slightly bigger perhaps a few inches bigger so that the cover will fit the comforter.
The more expensive types of duvet inserts down and silk comforters are excellent insulators making the combination of insert and cover very thin and light weight for the amount of insulation and warmth they provide. Other types of inserts that are now available though not equal to down and silk comforters still provide very good bed cover qualities.
